Quarouble entity encounter — 1954

On the night of September 10, 1954, railway worker Marius Dewilde was at his small house near the tracks at Quarouble in northern France when his dog began barking. Going outside, he noticed a dark object resting near the railway line and two short figures moving nearby. Dewilde described the figures as compact and bulky, with large smooth helmets or head coverings that concealed their faces. When he attempted to approach, a powerful light from the object struck him. He said he could not move while the figures returned to the craft. The object then rose rapidly and disappeared. Police and investigators visited the location. Reports mentioned marks or impressions near the track and disturbed railway ballast, although later accounts differ over their exact form and evidentiary value. Railway equipment and ordinary ground disturbance complicated interpretation. No vehicle or occupant was recovered, and no photograph captured the event. The case became an early landmark of the 1954 French wave because it joined a landed-object report, close occupants and an alleged paralysis effect. Dewilde repeated the account publicly, while authorities and journalists produced a record that was more substantial than a single anonymous catalog entry. At the same time, retellings expanded some details, so the Atlas distinguishes Dewilde's central sequence from later embellishment. Alternative explanations have included misidentified people, railway activity and fabrication. None is established by decisive evidence. CE3 is retained because the conscious report describes visible figures associated with a nearby landed object. The portrait reconstructs the reported exterior sequence: Dewilde beside the cottage, the railway, two short helmeted figures and the bright light. It is illustrative, not documentary evidence.
