ROSA LOTTI DAINELLI — CENNINA — 1954

Case description

At about 06:30 on November 1, 1954, forty-year-old Rosa Lotti Dainelli left her farm near Cennina in Tuscany and walked toward the village church and cemetery for a religious observance. The grass was wet, so she carried her shoes and stockings rather than wearing them. She also carried a bunch of carnations. Crossing an open meadow, Lotti saw an unfamiliar object standing vertically on the ground. She compared its outline with a spindle or two cones joined at their broad bases. An opening in the lower section revealed two small seats inside. Two figures came from behind the object and moved toward her. Lotti estimated them at roughly one metre tall. They wore tight gray one-piece garments that enclosed their feet, short gray capes and reddish helmets with extensions resembling earflaps. Their faces appeared unusual primarily because their mouths showed large, prominent white teeth. They spoke quickly in a language she could not understand. Their behavior initially seemed curious or friendly; one smiled or laughed as they approached. The encounter then focused on the items Lotti was carrying. One of the beings took her carnations and one stocking, wrapped the flowers in the stocking and threw or placed the bundle into the open craft. The other carried a circular object wrapped in brown material beneath one arm. Lotti became frightened, backed away and ran from the field. The beings did not take her aboard, and the account does not describe a weapon, paralysis, missing time or physical injury. The removal of the flowers and stocking was the principal reported physical interaction. The story entered contemporary Italian reporting and later became one of the best-known humanoid accounts of the 1954 European wave. Investigators and cataloguers repeated it internationally. Later versions differ over minor details, including whether the date was October 30 or November 1 and the exact wording used for the craft and figures. The better-developed chronology places the event on the morning of November 1, consistent with the religious-observance setting. The Atlas retains the alternate date in the source notes rather than erasing it. It also separates the direct narrative from later claims of traces, missing time or technical instruments that are not established by the compared account. The specificity of Lotti's ordinary possessions, the two empty seats, the beings' clothing and the flowers wrapped in a stocking makes the story unusually memorable. That narrative distinctiveness is not equivalent to proof. No authenticated photograph, surviving garment with chain of custody or independently documented physical sample is presented here. CE3 reflects her reported close observation of two figures associated with a landed object. The Atlas does not decide whether the episode was an external encounter, misperception, folklore, psychological experience or fabrication. The portrait reconstructs the central exchange: barefoot Rosa holds her shoes as one small figure reaches for the carnations and stocking, the second carries a brown-wrapped circular object, and the vertical spindle craft stands open with two seats visible. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
