Case description

On September 4, 1964, Donald Shrum became separated from his companions while bow hunting in the Tahoe National Forest near Cisco Grove, California. As darkness settled, he climbed a tree for safety and signaled with small fires or lights, expecting the other hunters to find him. Instead, Shrum said he saw an unusual light move through the forest and descend nearby. Soon afterward, figures approached the base of the tree. He described two small humanoid beings wearing close-fitting suits and a separate, bulkier figure that moved mechanically and was often characterized as a robot. The smaller figures were associated with large dark eyes or face areas; the mechanical figure reportedly had glowing red-orange eye openings. Shrum believed the figures were trying to force him down. He fired arrows, threw burning material and used portions of his clothing as makeshift torches. At one point he said a white vapor or gas rose toward him and caused him to lose consciousness temporarily. The episode continued for hours, with the hunter remaining in the tree until daylight. When his companions found him, Shrum was exhausted and distressed. The story was later investigated and published, but no craft, figure or mechanical device was recovered. Marks, broken branches or arrows in a forest setting cannot by themselves demonstrate the extraordinary interpretation. The case rests principally on Shrum's testimony and the condition in which others reportedly found him. The duration and complex sequence make the report memorable, yet they also invite questions about perception under isolation, darkness, fatigue and fear. Alternative explanations have included misidentification, a nightmare-like experience or a fabricated story. None fully reproduces every reported detail, and none is established by decisive physical evidence. CE3 is retained because the conscious account describes multiple visible entities associated with a nearby object. The Atlas does not elevate the mechanical figure into proof of technology or treat later illustrations as photographs. The portrait shows Shrum's reported defensive position in the tree, with the two humanoid figures and separate mechanical form on the forest floor. It avoids injury or sensational combat and is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
