Case description

On the evening of August 7, 1968, two employees at a summer camp on the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain remained near the waterfront after most of the campers had gone to an event elsewhere. The witnesses are generally identified as Michael Lapp and Janet Cornell. From the dock area they noticed an unusual light moving over the lake. The light appeared at first like a bright star or distant aircraft, but it changed position and approached. The witnesses later described an orange-white glow and a disc-like object with a luminous or transparent-looking upper section. As it came nearer, light reflected across the water and the dock. Their ordinary lakeside evening became a close encounter as the object appeared to hover in front of them. The most extraordinary part of the account emerged years later. Lapp reported recurring dreams and fragmentary memories, and in 1978 investigator Walter N. Webb conducted hypnotic-regression sessions with both witnesses. Under hypnosis they described a beam or directed light, small nonhuman figures and being taken into the object. They recalled examinations and then a return to the dock, with a gap in their conscious memory of the evening. The testimony is notable because the two witnesses were interviewed separately and were said to have produced overlapping elements. It is also limited by the decade between the event and the regression sessions. Hypnosis can increase confidence without guaranteeing accuracy, and questions, expectations and later discussion can shape recalled imagery. The Atlas therefore separates what the witnesses consciously reported seeing at the lake from details recovered during hypnosis. No contemporaneous photograph, landing trace or instrument record is known to establish the craft or the alleged onboard episode. The case rests primarily on personal testimony and the later investigative record. The surviving narrative has nevertheless become an important part of abduction literature because of its lakeside setting, paired witnesses and the investigator's attempt to compare their accounts. CE4 is retained because the later testimony alleges involuntary transport and examination. That label describes the content of the report; it does not certify the recovered memories as literal history. The portrait shows only the well-known opening scene: two witnesses on the dock and an approaching luminous disc above Lake Champlain. It deliberately avoids depicting the alleged interior examination as established fact. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not case evidence.
