Pascagoula abduction
Pascagoula River, Mississippi, United States
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On the evening of October 11, 1973, shipyard workers Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker went fishing from an abandoned pier or riverbank near the Pascagoula River in Mississippi. Hickson was in his early forties; Parker was nineteen and newly arrived for work. As daylight faded, they heard a buzzing or whirring sound and saw blue lights flashing behind them. Turning, they reported an oval or football-shaped object hovering close to the ground, roughly thirty to forty feet long and eight to ten feet high.
A hatch opened. Three beings floated or glided from the object rather than walking normally. Hickson described them as roughly five feet tall, with wrinkled grey skin and extraordinary head structures: pointed or carrot-like projections where a nose and ears might be, a slit for a mouth, and no clearly visible eyes. Their hands ended in pincer-like or claw-like forms. Their legs or lower bodies seemed fused, and they moved as if weightless. The figures were not the smooth, large-eyed "greys" common in later popular imagery.
Two beings took hold of Hickson while another approached Parker. Hickson said he was unable to resist but remained conscious. Parker fainted or lost awareness. The men were moved into the craft, where Hickson found himself suspended or immobilized in a bright interior. A large mechanical eye-like device floated near him and moved around his body as if examining or photographing him. He reported no cutting, needles or spoken message. Parker remembered much less of the central episode at the time. After what Hickson estimated as perhaps twenty minutes, the men were returned to the riverbank and the object departed.
Shaken and uncertain whom to tell, the pair first contacted authorities at Keesler Air Force Base and were directed to local law enforcement. Later that night they arrived at the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Fred Diamond and Captain Glenn Ryder questioned them separately and together. Suspicious that the account might be a prank, officers left Hickson and Parker alone in an interview room while a recorder continued running without the witnesses' knowledge. Instead of dropping the story or laughing, the secret tape captured sustained fear, Parker's distress and Hickson attempting to steady him. The recording cannot prove what caused that fear, but it is unusually immediate behavioral evidence.
The story became public almost at once. Investigators, reporters and UFO researchers interviewed the men; Hickson underwent hypnosis, while Parker's early attempt was stopped because of his distress. Both men remained associated with the account for the rest of their lives, although Parker later added recollections and published his own version. Other people eventually reported unusual lights or observations in the area, but the timing and independence of those accounts vary and they do not constitute a photograph of the alleged abduction.
The case has genuine documentary strengths: two identified witnesses, rapid reporting, police interviews, the covert recording and descriptions given before decades of later publicity. It also has serious limits. There is no photograph of the object or beings, no recovered material, no medical finding that establishes an unknown cause and no direct third-party observation of the men being taken. Hickson supplied most of the detailed sequence because Parker was unconscious or unable to describe it. The secret tape supports their apparent sincerity and terror, not the extraterrestrial interpretation.
The Watchers Project portrait uses the riverbank as the main scene: the two fishermen, industrial Pascagoula horizon, blue-lit oval craft and exactly three floating beings with the peculiar projections and pincers in the original description. A single mechanical eye appears only as a restrained secondary image. No invasive examination, weapon, injury or generic alien anatomy is added. The case remains one of the best-documented CE4 claims because its human aftermath was recorded so quickly, while the extraordinary cause remains unverified.
