Case description

On the night of January 6, 1976, three women—Louise Smith, Mona Stafford and Elaine Thomas—were driving home through rural Kentucky after a restaurant trip. Near Stanford they noticed a brilliant object in the sky. It appeared to follow the car and then came close enough to flood the road and vehicle with reddish-orange light. The women described the object as disc-like, with a bright rim or underside. They tried to continue driving while watching it from the car. Their recollections of the roadway phase included heat, unusual light and fear that the object was keeping pace with them. At some point the continuity of the trip broke. They arrived home later than expected and could not account for a substantial interval. Afterward, all three reported physical discomfort. Accounts mention irritated or burning eyes, headaches and marks or soreness. The car was also described as unusually hot. Concern about the missing time and their symptoms led to investigation and, later, hypnotic-regression sessions. During regression the women described being removed from the car, taken into an unfamiliar environment and subjected to examinations by nonhuman figures. Details varied, but the sessions formed the basis for the case's CE4 reputation. The recovered material must be distinguished from the shared conscious memory of the light, vehicle pursuit and disrupted journey. Hypnosis is not a recording of the past; it can produce vivid narratives from uncertain memory, suggestion and expectation. Investigators treated the presence of three witnesses as important, especially because each woman could be interviewed. Multiple witnesses can strengthen the evidence for a shared unusual experience, but they do not by themselves establish the cause or validate every later-recovered detail. The women had opportunities to talk with one another, and the extraordinary interior account lacks independent physical confirmation. The case remains significant because it combines a close roadway observation, three adult witnesses, reported missing time and post-event symptoms. CE4 is retained because the published investigative record alleges involuntary transport and examination. The Atlas presents that classification as a description of the claim rather than proof of an extraterrestrial event. The portrait depicts the strongest common scene: the three women inside their period car while the intense object illuminates a winter Kentucky road. It does not portray the alleged examination as established fact. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
