Emilcin abduction
Emilcin village, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On the morning of May 10, 1978, Jan Wolski, a seventy-one-year-old farmer, was driving a horse-drawn cart along a rural track near the village of Emilcin in eastern Poland. The road passed through fields and woodland familiar to him. Wolski later said that two small figures appeared on the path ahead. Rather than fleeing, they climbed onto the cart behind him, and the horse continued toward a clearing.
Wolski described the passengers as short, perhaps around one and a half meters or less, with greenish or olive faces, prominent cheekbones and slanting dark eyes. Their close-fitting black garments covered most of their bodies. He did not understand the rapid, birdlike or otherwise unfamiliar sounds they made to one another. They did not threaten him with weapons. The strangeness came from their appearance and from the calm way in which they accompanied him through an ordinary Polish farming landscape.
At the clearing Wolski said he saw a white object hovering several meters above the ground. It was not the conventional disc later used in many UFO illustrations. He compared it to a rectangular bus or small building suspended in the air, with dark openings and several protrusions. A platform or lift descended from its underside. One of the beings gestured for him to step onto it, and the platform carried them into the craft. His horse and cart remained below.
Inside, Wolski recalled a dark or minimally furnished compartment occupied by two additional beings. He was instructed by gestures to remove his clothes. A device resembling two plates, discs or dishes was moved around his body in what he interpreted as an examination. The beings touched him but, in his account, did not injure him. They offered him translucent, icicle-like pieces of food; he declined. After the examination he dressed, was returned to the ground on the platform and watched the object depart.
Wolski went home and told his family. Relatives and neighbors then accompanied him back to the clearing. Reports describe disturbed or flattened vegetation and unusual footprints, although the site was not secured as a forensic scene and the marks were open to contamination and ordinary explanations. Wolski's sons and other local people became part of the early witness chain, not because they had seen the examination, but because they heard his account promptly and visited the reported location.
The incident attracted researchers and the attention of the Milicja, the police structure of communist-era Poland. Investigators recorded Wolski's testimony and examined the area. His age, rural background and apparently matter-of-fact manner contributed to the case's reputation. At the same time, nearly every extraordinary feature inside the object depended on his single-witness account. No photograph of the craft, occupant or examination was taken, and no recovered material established an extraterrestrial origin.
Debate in Poland has continued for decades. Supporters regard the immediate family disclosure, site marks and consistency of the basic story as reasons to take Wolski seriously. Critics have proposed misidentification, fabrication, suggestion or a narrative shaped by investigators and publicity. Questions have also been raised about how the testimony was gathered and promoted. The surviving evidence does not settle those alternatives.
Emilcin later erected a memorial presenting the event as a UFO encounter, making the small village inseparable from the story. The memorial records cultural memory, not proof. The Atlas preserves both levels: a documented 1978 report by a named farmer and the extraordinary sequence he said occurred.
The case portrait reconstructs the most distinctive, least sensational moment: Wolski on his horse cart, the two small black-clad figures riding behind him, and the white rectangular craft hovering over the forest clearing with its underside platform. It follows the testimony rather than replacing it with a generic flying saucer and remains explicitly labeled as an illustrative reconstruction.
