On the rainy night of December 6, 1978, private security guard Pier Fortunato Zanfretta was making his rounds in the hills northeast of Genoa. He drove to a villa near Marzano di Torriglia after an alarm or report of a possible intrusion. The isolated property, steep terrain and bad weather made the assignment ordinary but uncomfortable. What followed became the first episode in a series of encounters Zanfretta reported between 1978 and 1981.
Zanfretta said his patrol car and radio began behaving abnormally near the property. Moving around the grounds with a flashlight, he initially thought a large dark shape was a thief. When his beam reached it, he confronted something much larger. He described an immense being approaching three meters in height, with rough, folded or mottled skin and enormous luminous yellow eyes whose triangular form became one of the case's defining details. He interpreted the figure as reptilian or monstrous rather than human.
The guard radioed his control center in distress. Colleagues heard fragments of alarm and then lost normal contact. When a search party reached the area, Zanfretta was found in a shocked and confused condition. Accounts emphasize the pouring rain while also claiming that parts of his clothing were unusually warm or dry. He reportedly suffered physical distress and temporary memory loss. A medical examination documented his agitated state, but it could not establish what caused it.
Zanfretta later described a huge craft associated with the encounter. Its form varies across retellings and across the later episodes: dark, red-lit, oval, triangular, boxlike or delta-shaped. Some accounts include visible ground traces and electromagnetic interference affecting the patrol car. The Atlas does not compress those variations into one falsely precise machine. The portrait places a large dark angular structure in the rainy distance while keeping the first confrontation—the part most consistently remembered—as the visual center.
Under hypnosis and in subsequent interviews, Zanfretta supplied a longer abduction narrative involving multiple beings and time aboard a craft. He called the beings Dargos and described further encounters over the following years. He also spoke of an object or sphere allegedly entrusted to him. No artifact with a documented, independently verified chain of custody emerged to confirm those claims. Details obtained through hypnosis are especially vulnerable to suggestion, confabulation and later narrative development, so the Atlas identifies rather than silently incorporates them.
The investigation involved Zanfretta's employer, police or Carabinieri personnel, physicians, journalists and Italian UFO researchers. His first radio communications, the dispatch of colleagues and his distressed recovery gave the incident a documented social frame beyond a solitary later story. The extraordinary beings and onboard experiences, however, remained dependent on Zanfretta's testimony. Reported marks, vehicle effects and medical findings were not decisive enough to identify an unknown craft or nonhuman visitor.
Public attention in Italy became intense. Zanfretta repeated his account in interviews and on television, and the case accumulated new episodes, interpretations and imagery. That visibility preserved the story but also made the evidentiary record harder to separate from hypnosis, media retelling and folklore. Skeptical explanations have included stress, misperception in darkness and rain, psychological factors, or elaboration after the initial emergency. Supporters argue that the real-time alarm, search response and witness's obvious distress resist dismissal as a simple invented tale.
The responsible conclusion is narrower than either certainty. A security guard experienced a severe and documented episode during a rainy patrol and described a towering creature with triangular yellow eyes, vehicle interference and a large craft. The available public evidence does not establish the nature of what he encountered. Later abduction and artifact claims require still greater caution.
The case portrait reconstructs the first night: Zanfretta beside his late-1970s patrol car, flashlight catching the immense rough-skinned figure with two unmistakably triangular yellow eyes, rain falling around the villa, and only a restrained suggestion of the disputed angular craft behind them. It is a visual guide to the testimony, not proof of the event.
