In the early hours of January 20, 1988, the Knowles family was driving east across the Nullarbor Plain near Mundrabilla when a bright object approached their car. The witnesses described a white or yellow-white light that behaved aggressively, pacing the vehicle and coming down over the road. Driver Sean Knowles tried to avoid it. The family said the object settled over the car and the vehicle seemed to rise from the road. A dark or powdery substance, strange sounds and an unusual smell were reported. The car was brought to a stop after tire damage and loss of control; the family left it in fear. Truck drivers and other distant observers reported unusual lights in the wider area, though their sightings did not reproduce every feature of the family's close encounter. Police and UFO investigators examined the vehicle. Damage and residue were discussed, but no finding uniquely identified an aerial object as the cause. Explanations have included an extraordinary craft, a bright celestial object distorted by atmospheric conditions, unusual road-light effects and a panic-driven accident.
