Ilkley Moor UFO incident

On the morning of December 1, 1987, a retired police officer using the name Philip Spencer crossed Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire while carrying a camera. In cold, misty conditions he saw a short dark figure ahead of him and took a photograph as it moved away. Spencer described the figure as small, with long arms and an unusual head. He followed long enough to see a low domed object on the moor, which then departed. After returning to town, he believed more time had passed than his walk could account for and found that his compass behaved abnormally. The developed photograph shows a distant dark form against the moor. Image examination can establish features of the film and print, but the small subject does not yield an unambiguous identity. Enlargements have amplified grain and contrast, allowing very different interpretations. Under hypnosis, Spencer later described being taken aboard a craft, examined and shown imagery or information about Earth. Those details transformed the case from a photographed entity report into an abduction narrative, but they were not part of the same conscious memory as the initial photograph and alleged craft sighting. Investigators have considered a costumed person, misidentified hiker, exposure artifact, hoax and extraordinary encounter. The photograph's existence gives the case a tangible artifact, yet it does not settle what was photographed. Hypnosis adds narrative detail without independently verifying it. CE3 is retained for the conscious report of a figure associated with an object; later transport claims are recorded as a separate testimony layer. The portrait reproduces the bleak distance and photographic act without copying the original image. It is an illustrative reconstruction.
