Linda Napolitano / Manhattan abduction
Lower Manhattan / Brooklyn Bridge area, New York, United States
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
In the early hours of November 30, 1989, Linda Napolitano said that an extraordinary event unfolded at her apartment in Lower Manhattan. She reported awakening to the presence of small nonhuman figures and then being lifted through a closed window into a luminous craft hovering beside the building. The claim placed an alleged abduction in one of the most densely populated settings in the world.
Investigator Budd Hopkins developed the case over several years. Napolitano's account included an onboard examination and a return to the apartment. Hopkins later said he received communications from purported independent observers, including a woman on the Brooklyn Bridge and two men he identified by the pseudonyms Richard and Dan. In the most dramatic version, a senior political figure was also said to have witnessed the event from a vehicle.
The evidentiary story became increasingly complicated. The alleged outside witnesses did not enter a transparent public interview process, and the identities and independence of key correspondents remained disputed. Richard and Dan were also described as having later contacted, followed or abducted Napolitano themselves, adding extraordinary subsidiary claims that were difficult to verify.
Supporters argue that an urban event with multiple reported vantage points gives the case unusual weight. Critics, including other UFO investigators, have questioned the witness handling, anonymous letters, internal inconsistencies and absence of publicly testable corroboration. No authenticated photograph, radar record or building evidence has established the hovering craft or passage through the window.
The Atlas preserves the distinction between Napolitano's first-person account, Hopkins's investigative interpretation and the unverified testimony attributed to unnamed third parties. CE4 is retained because the primary narrative alleges involuntary transport and examination; it is not a certification that those events occurred.
The portrait shows the reported urban geometry rather than the abduction itself: Lower Manhattan before dawn, the Brooklyn Bridge, a luminous object beside the apartment building and a distant adult silhouette at a window. It avoids depicting levitation or an onboard procedure as fact. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not evidence.
