Orfeo Angelucci’s first major contact claim began late on Friday, May 23, 1952, during his shift at the Lockheed Aircraft plant in Burbank, California. In the account he published in 1955, Angelucci wrote that at about 11 p.m. he developed a prickling sensation, heart palpitations, nervous tension, and the feeling that an electrical storm was approaching, even though the sky was clear. When the shift ended around 12:30 a.m., he drove away exhausted and anxious.
As he followed Victory Boulevard and Riverside Drive, Angelucci said the night seemed wrapped in a golden haze. A faint red oval appeared ahead of him, glowing more strongly while remaining at roughly the same apparent distance. It stopped near the intersection with Forest Lawn Drive, a quiet stretch close to the Los Angeles River. Angelucci turned onto the deserted road and encountered two small green luminous discs hovering several feet apart.
A male voice speaking English allegedly came from between the discs. It called him by name, told him not to be afraid, and asked him to leave his car. Angelucci said the voice described the green discs as communication instruments controlled by beings from another world. When he became intensely thirsty, he reported finding a crystal-like cup on the car’s fender. After drinking from it, he said his physical distress disappeared and the cup itself vanished.
The space between the two green discs then became a luminous screen. Within it Angelucci said he saw the heads and shoulders of a man and woman with generally human features, unusually expressive eyes, and an idealized appearance. He experienced the communication as partly spoken and partly telepathic. The message described the visitors as older relatives of humanity, warned about the dangers facing Earth, and presented the saucers as remotely controlled instruments. After the exchange, the projected images faded, the two discs brightened, and they shot upward after the larger red object.
Angelucci reached home near dawn in an agitated condition. His wife saw that he was visibly distressed, although she had not witnessed the roadside events. He later connected this episode to further claimed contacts, visionary journeys, and spiritual messages, publishing them as The Secret of the Saucers. The account is detailed but rests principally on Angelucci’s own testimony; no independent witness or physical trace establishes what occurred on Forest Lawn Drive. The Atlas preserves both dimensions: a vivid foundational contactee narrative and its status as an uncorroborated personal claim.
