Howard Menger contact claims — retrospective series
High Bridge area, New Jersey, United States
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
Howard Menger presented his contacts not as one isolated sighting but as a life story that began in the wooded country near High Bridge, New Jersey. In his 1959 book From Outer Space to You, he said his family moved there when he was eight. The farm, orchards, brooks, and surrounding woods became his childhood territory. He and his younger brother reportedly began seeing bright discs that skimmed, hovered, and vanished in the sky. Menger also described a small disc, about ten feet across, landing in a field while a larger object remained overhead. The boys approached to within roughly twenty-five feet before the smaller object vibrated and departed in a flash. Their account was treated by the family as childhood imagination.
The scene that became the emotional center of Menger's story occurred in 1932, when he was ten. Drawn to a secluded place beside a brook, he said he found a beautiful woman sitting on a rock. He described long golden hair, luminous golden eyes, pale skin with pink undertones, and a shimmering, seamless garment resembling a close-fitting ski suit. She addressed him by name and said she had come a long way to see and speak with him. Menger later interpreted her as a visitor from Venus and connected the meeting to memories and purposes he believed extended beyond his present life. No independent witness observed that conversation.
After military service and years devoted to family and his sign-painting business, Menger said the contacts resumed forcefully in March 1956. Telepathic impressions allegedly called him from his home at night to secluded meeting points. Some episodes were surprisingly mundane: he said he purchased ordinary clothing and food for newly arrived visitors, cut the long hair of a man who needed to pass unnoticed, and helped acclimate them to terrestrial customs. He also reported entering a scout craft and viewing a three-dimensional presentation of what he understood to be Venus, with domed buildings, forests, water, and floating vehicles. He placed an alleged lunar journey in August 1956.
Menger eventually invited other people to selected field locations. He wrote that groups saw pulsating observation discs and, on a later night, several tall humanlike visitors near an apple orchard. The witnesses were farther away and did not independently confirm the visitors' claimed planetary origins. Radio appearances, public meetings, photographs, films, music attributed to Saturn, and his 1959 book made Menger a major figure of the contactee era.
The Atlas treats this as Menger's retrospective contact narrative, not verified extraterrestrial history. The first-person book is invaluable for establishing what he actually claimed and how the episodes fit together, but it was published decades after the childhood meeting and does not supply independent evidence for the Venusian identity, telepathy, spacecraft journeys, or lunar visit.
