Case description

Eduard 'Billy' Meier placed the beginning of his best-known contact series on the afternoon of January 28, 1975, in the countryside near Hinwil, Switzerland. Meier was thirty-seven, a farmer and traveler who had lost his lower left arm in an earlier accident. He already claimed contacts reaching back to childhood, but the 1975 sequence was different: it produced detailed transcripts, hundreds of photographs, films and physical samples that would make his story one of the most recognizable—and disputed—cases in modern UFO culture. According to Meier's introductory record, he reached a rural field under heavy cloud at about 2:15 p.m. A metallic disc approximately seven metres wide approached from the south and maneuvered near trees and a parked lorry. Meier photographed what he called a beamship before meeting its pilot at 2:34. He identified her as Semjase, a human-looking woman from the Pleiades, later revised in the group's terminology to the Plejaren star system. Movement literature describes her as slender and fair-skinned, with blue eyes, fine light-blonde hair and unusually long, forward-set earlobes. The published conversation reads as a remembered dialogue rather than a contemporaneous recording. Semjase allegedly told Meier that he had been chosen to clarify humanity's misunderstandings about extraterrestrial visitors and spiritual development. The exchange also addressed the camera: when Meier asked why he had been kept away from the landed ship, she reportedly said its field would have destroyed his film and that he was expected to retain photographic evidence. Meetings continued through 1975 and beyond, expanding into claims of flights aboard the craft, encounters with other named Plejaren figures, time travel and extensive philosophical teaching. The photographs became the public center of the case. They show sharply defined saucers over Swiss fields, forests and villages; one later inspired the famous office poster in The X-Files. Collectors and supporters point to the quantity of photographs and movies, Meier's disability, reported witnesses and analyses they believe exclude conventional fabrication. Critics have long noted that some filmed objects swing like suspended models, that mundane foreground and background details create scale problems, and that purportedly extraordinary images have matched pre-existing illustrations or entertainment photographs. A contemporary review of Gary Kinder's sympathetic book reported that Meier acknowledged carving a small saucer model used in some photographs. Those conflicts make the media historically important but evidentially unsafe. The Atlas links visitors to the original photo collections and authorized contact reports but does not host unlicensed copies or label the photographed objects as alien spacecraft. The reconstruction instead visualizes the first-contact narrative without duplicating a particular photograph. The case record preserves what Meier claimed, the remarkable visual archive he built, and the substantive model and source objections. No photograph, transcript or sample in the public record independently establishes that Semjase or a Plejaren beamship was physically present near Hinwil.
