Case description

At about 5:30 on the cold, dark morning of July 13, 1959, Eileen Moreland switched on the milking-shed light and crossed the family paddock near Blenheim, New Zealand, to bring in the cows. She carried a torch and was bundled against the winter air. Thick cloud hung at roughly 2,000 feet. Halfway across the field, she noticed an unnatural green glow forming in the clouds above her. Two brighter green lights, which she compared to enormous eyes, appeared within it and began to descend. The paddock, the cattle and Moreland's own hands were washed in a sickly green light. Moreland ran toward a stand of radiata pines and watched from beside a trunk. A heavy, flattened object came down smoothly and stopped at about roof height, roughly forty metres away and above a line of peach trees. She estimated it at twenty to twenty-five feet across and perhaps seven or eight feet deep—closer to a thick cylindrical section than a thin flying saucer. Two bands around its body contained brilliant orange jets with green centers. During the descent they appeared fixed; once the craft hovered, the upper and lower bands seemed to counter-rotate until the lights blended into two continuous halos. She heard humming and hissing rather than an aircraft engine. Then the jets stopped. A clear dome on top filled with white light, revealing two figures seated one behind the other and facing the same direction. Both wore tight, crinkled, reflective suits that Moreland compared to aluminum foil. Large opaque helmets extended from shoulder to shoulder, concealing their faces. The rear figure, a little over five feet tall by her estimate, stood and leaned forward on both hands as though examining something between the seats. The forward figure did not visibly move. Moreland never claimed to see either figure outside the object. After two or three minutes, the bands lit again. The craft tilted slightly, rushed vertically into the cloud and vanished with a rising, almost unbearable whine and a rush of air. Moreland noticed sudden warmth and an odor like hot pepper or ozone. The cows appeared only mildly disturbed. Hearing the town clock strike 5:45, she completed the milking before waking her family. Her husband, who worked at the nearby Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Woodbourne, urged her to notify police and Air Force authorities. Investigators questioned her and requested a detailed sketch. Newspapers reported the event soon afterward, bringing unwanted visitors to the farm. Later accounts added claims of persistent brown facial patches, unusually vigorous grass, dead fruit trees, sound-frequency tests and residual radiation. Those details vary in documentation and should not be treated as equally secure with Moreland's prompt report and description. Her witness-approved drawings survive through later reproductions rather than a clearly licensed original file. The Atlas therefore links to them but does not copy them. The core case remains a single-witness close observation with rapid reporting, specific mechanical detail and two obscured figures. Its cause is unresolved; neither the report nor the later effects establish an extraterrestrial origin.
