Long Prairie entity encounter
Long Prairie, Minnesota, United States
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
At about 7:15 on the evening of October 23, 1965, nineteen-year-old radio announcer James F. "Jerry" Townsend was driving west on Minnesota Highway 27 toward Long Prairie. He was roughly four miles east of town when he rounded a curve and his 1956 car abruptly lost power. The engine stopped, the headlights went dark and the radio fell silent. Coasting forward, Townsend braked to a halt about twenty feet from a tall object standing upright across the road.
He compared it to a silver rocket. It was about ten feet in diameter and somewhere between thirty and forty feet high, tall enough in his estimation to rise above the roadside trees. Three broad fins or legs supported it on the pavement. A brilliant colorless light shone from beneath the object, illuminating a circle on the road. Townsend first thought of using his car to knock the object over as proof, but the vehicle was dead. He got out and walked around its front with the idea of pushing or rocking the object by hand.
That impulse ended when three tiny forms came from behind the rocket and moved toward him. Townsend did not describe conventional humanoids. Each was only about six inches tall, with a dark brown-black cylindrical body resembling a small can. Thin projections like matchsticks extended from the sides as arms. Two short fins served as feet, producing a rocking or waddling movement; some accounts say a third rear fin lowered when a figure stopped, forming a tripod. He saw no eyes, mouth or facial features, yet felt the three things were watching him. They approached the car, and Townsend decided that anything capable of disabling the vehicle might also be capable of harming him.
For what he later estimated as roughly three minutes, the young man and the three small machines or creatures faced one another in silence. Then they turned, moved back beneath the rocket and disappeared into the intense pool of light. A high-pitched hum began. The object rose vertically, initially slowly, its underside light making it look to Townsend like an illuminated flashlight being lifted from a table. At an estimated quarter-mile altitude the light went out and the object vanished from view. At that moment, he said, the car's engine, lights and radio returned without his touching the starter.
Townsend drove rapidly to Long Prairie and reported the encounter. Todd County Sheriff James Bain and Long Prairie police officer Lavern Lubitz visited the road. Published accounts disagree about physical traces: Townsend's signed summary said he found no marks, while newspaper-derived reports say officers discovered three parallel strips of oil-like material, each about a yard long and spaced roughly four inches apart. Bain reportedly said he had examined many roads and had not seen marks like them. Nearby hunters also reported a strong light or an illuminated object in the area, but those observations did not independently confirm the rocket or the tiny forms.
Investigators asked teachers and acquaintances about Townsend and were told that he was considered honest; the sheriff said he appeared genuinely frightened and was not known as a drinker. J. Allen Hynek later discussed the case as an example of a close encounter with unusual occupants, while noting that he pursued it personally rather than through a full official Air Force investigation. The Atlas preserves the event as an unresolved CE3 report. The illustration follows Townsend's distinctive description precisely: an upright finned rocket, a disabled period car and three six-inch can-like machines—not later, familiar grey aliens. The trace claim, exact dimensions and identity of the objects remain unverified.
