Case description

At about 10:30 on the night of September 20, 1965, Geoffrey Maskey stopped his car on or near Walton Avenue in Felixstowe, Suffolk. Two friends, Michael Johnson and a young woman identified in different retellings as Mavis Fordyce or Mavis Forsyth, were with him. While Geoffrey and Mavis continued talking, Michael opened a door, got out without explanation and disappeared into the darkness beside the lane. His companions were puzzled but initially assumed that he had stepped away for an ordinary private reason. A few minutes later, the two people remaining with the car heard a high-pitched humming sound. Geoffrey looked out to locate it and saw a brilliant orange oval object. Accounts place it about one hundred feet, or thirty meters, away or above the lane and estimate its length at roughly six feet. Its glow illuminated the hedges, roadway and nearby landscape. The object then moved rapidly behind trees or out of sight, although the humming reportedly continued. This orange aerial object was the part of the episode that Geoffrey and Mavis were said to have observed together. Their concern shifted back to Michael. They called his name and received no answer. Geoffrey moved the car in reverse and called again. Michael eventually staggered out through or beside a hedge, clutching his head, eyes or neck. At first his friends wondered whether he was playing a joke, but he collapsed in the road and could not be awakened. They put him in the car and drove him to Felixstowe Hospital. Retellings say that he regained consciousness without recognizing his companions, was diagnosed as suffering severe shock, and had burn-like marks on the back of his neck plus a swelling or contusion near his right ear. He was reportedly transferred to Ipswich Hospital and released the following afternoon. Only after recovering did Michael supply the humanoid portion of the story. He said that an involuntary compulsion or pressing force had made him leave the car and walk into the darkness. There he encountered what he described as a man-like figure with large, sloping luminous eyes, surrounded or bathed in orange flame-like light. One version says the figure pointed at him. Michael remembered nothing after that moment until waking in the hospital. Geoffrey and Mavis did not claim to see this being; their reported observation was the humming orange oval and Michael's subsequent return and collapse. The story is commonly called the Felixstowe Fire Demon, but that dramatic name came through later folklore and online retelling. A September 21, 1965 Ipswich Evening Star article and a November 1965 Flying Saucer Review article are repeatedly cited as early sources, yet accessible case reviews have not produced the original newspaper report or a medical record. Even the woman's surname, the exact time, the object's altitude and the location wording vary. A modern Felixstowe news article consequently treats the account as an urban legend or possible creepypasta rather than confirmed local history. The Atlas keeps the case because it has a specific place, date, named participants and a coherent reported sequence, but labels its provenance as weak. The portrait deliberately separates the two evidentiary layers: Geoffrey and Mavis watch the orange object while Michael emerges from the hedge, and the fire-like figure remains distant and obscured as his uncorroborated recollection. No external historical image is displayed, because no witness photograph or reliably licensed primary document has been located. Until the newspaper clipping, hospital documentation or direct witness testimony is recovered, the event remains an unresolved and poorly sourced CE3 legend rather than a verified medical or extraterrestrial encounter.
