Case description

During October and early November 1965, residents around Mogi Guaçu in São Paulo state, Brazil, reportedly saw unexplained lights and objects moving above or close to a large farm complex owned by industrial chemist Dario Anhaua Filho. The most detailed accounts describe two nights, November 11 and 13, when luminous objects allegedly returned to an adjoining field and small figures were seen gathering vegetation. At about 9:00 p.m. on November 11, Dario was away in town on business involving the mayor. His wife noticed a strange light and, despite being frightened by the earlier sightings, walked toward the farm gate with her grandson. In the nearby field she saw a bright object on or close to the ground and two small luminous figures beside it. One moved back and forth along the furrows, picking up twigs, leaves and brushwood and carrying them in its arms. The other stood near the fence and appeared to watch a mare on the opposite side. The figures seemed indifferent to the woman and child. A truck carrying people who were singing and shouting passed the farm. The object withdrew, and one figure was said to rise rapidly into it through a green-colored tube that appeared at its side. After the truck had gone, the object returned and the collection of plant material resumed. When another car approached, the light went out and the object moved away again; during that departure Mrs. Filho reportedly noticed two similar objects overhead. The principal object then came back once more. One small occupant activated a green light from a device about the size of a drinking glass, an explosive sound was heard, and the object and figures finally left. When Dario returned, his wife told him what had happened. Rather than wait alone for another visit, he invited friends and local officials to watch the field. On the night of November 13, the object reportedly returned after dark and landed or hovered about four hundred feet—roughly 120 to 130 meters—from the fence. Dario, his wife, grandson and a local bank manager were present. A sheriff and police clerk driving nearby were said to have seen the object hovering before it descended and stopped to watch. The bank manager had brought a camera, but in his excitement stumbled and dropped it; unable to find it in the dark, he obtained no photograph. Once in the field, the object projected a brilliant beam upward. This time the observers described three luminous figures about the size of seven-year-old children, viewed from approximately seventy feet away. One wore overalls. Another wore chocolate-brown trousers and a gray collarless shirt. The third appeared to have a flat, square head and wore something resembling a surgeon's apron. They uprooted plants and plucked leaves and twigs as on the first night. Dario alerted a neighboring farm, and later accounts add Father Longino Vartbinden and a group of guards or police among those who watched from nearby. When the figures finished, they entered the object and it departed at high speed. No further visits were reported. Brazilian investigators Flavio Pereira, Leo Godoi Otero and Renato Bacelar reportedly examined the story and passed information to physician and APRO representative Olavo T. Fontes. Coral and Jim Lorenzen published the sequence in 1966 and 1967, and Jacques Vallée later catalogued the November 13 landing. The underlying field notes, witness interviews, police identities and APRO report are not presently available online, however, and no photograph survived the event. The Atlas therefore treats the case as an unusually detailed multiple-witness report whose surviving evidence is secondary literature. Its portrait depicts the second-night tableau—family, invited observers, police, mare, three distinctly dressed luminous figures and the upward beam—without inventing faces, anatomy or a precise craft design that the sources do not provide.
