Case description
Mrs. Arnevich, also rendered Arnerich in catalogues, reportedly awoke in a Martins Bay beach house to an unusually loud buzzing sound. Looking outside, she described a large rectangular object and two smaller objects, with figures moving between them on ladders. The observation reportedly continued for more than an hour.
The fuller INTCAT summary says the main object hovered roughly thirty metres high. First two, then three figures were visible; one wore a wetsuitlike garment. Silver, gold and orange light was directed between the objects as they maneuvered. They eventually separated and moved over the Hauraki Gulf.
There is a significant dating problem. INTCAT places the experience approximately in July 1978 and cites a Sunday News article published July 16, drawing on Vic Harris's investigation. The exact July 16 encounter date in the imported entry may therefore be the publication date. A sparse URECAT entry gives 9 a.m., while a closely similar December 1978 story supplies the ladder-and-repair sequence. Those variants cannot establish a single precise chronology.
The reported moving figures appeared humanlike, without a documented nonhuman anatomy. Gross proposes misinterpreted maritime activity as a possibility and emphasizes the weak primary-source trail. The Atlas retains the beach-house observation while marking the date and catalogue relationship as unresolved, rather than silently combining July and December into an exact-day event.
