Case description

At about 1:00 a.m. on July 28, 1998, two Algerian soldiers were in the Sahara roughly five kilometers from Tindouf. According to the surviving account, they had gone into town without their commander's permission. When a light began moving toward them, their first reaction was not to think of visitors from another world. They feared that their absence had been discovered and that someone from their unit was coming to find them. The two men crouched behind a low sand dune and watched the light approach. The object came extremely close. The reporting soldier estimated that it stopped about 4.5 meters in front of them and hovered only 1.5 meters above the ground. He described a craft approximately nine meters across, with a light at the front and another at the rear. One of the lights was especially strange: it shone directly downward in what he perceived as a square beam or a beam with a square cross-section. Other lights appeared on the top and underside. Between the forward and rear lights he saw a row of windows that appeared dark or dimly illuminated. The machine was not completely silent, but its sound was subdued—more like an ordinary ventilation fan than an aircraft engine. In the full-moon light, the soldier found the sight both imposing and beautiful. Fear quickly overcame curiosity. The two men broke cover and ran. When the reporting witness had put about thirty meters between himself and the object, he looked back. The craft had stopped in front of a dune. From it emerged what he could describe only as a thin or meager "thing." He did not see it clearly enough to report a face, eyes, limbs, skin color or precise height. The one feature he felt sure of was a small bump or protuberance on its head. There was no communication and no reported physical contact. After that glimpse, he and his companion ran as far and as fast as they could. The account does not describe the object's departure. The incident apparently remained private for more than three years. The witness said that neither soldier told others because they expected to be considered crazy; their unauthorized visit to town may also have given them a practical reason to remain silent. On December 11, 2001, the reporting soldier found UFO researcher Patrick Gross's website. After reading other testimonies and hesitating, he sent Gross an email under his real name and address, saying that the event had changed his life and that he wanted to get it off his chest. Gross translated the witness's phonetic French into readable French and English while withholding his identity from publication. That email is the only documented source currently available. No military record, contemporaneous statement, site inspection, photograph, drawing or independent testimony from the second soldier has been published. Gross explicitly noted that no investigation was possible. Those limitations do not erase the specificity of the witness's sequence, but they prevent the Atlas from treating it as corroborated evidence. The portrait therefore follows the report narrowly: two soldiers beside a dune under a full moon, a compact low-hovering craft with dark windows and multiple lights, a downward square beam, and one deliberately indistinct thin figure glimpsed only as the men flee. It does not portray a detailed grey alien, an abduction, paralysis, a battle or a giant mothership. The case is presented as a vivid later first-person report whose central claim remains unverified.
