Case description

In May 2008, the small town of San Carlos in Argentina's Calchaquí Valleys was already unsettled by reports of unusual lights in the surrounding sky. Against that background, two local mechanics, Walter López and Omar Ferlatti, reported a different kind of encounter: a very small humanlike figure whose presence, they said, prevented them from approaching. Contemporary Argentine news items appeared on May 21 and 22, placing the event on or shortly before those dates. The exact day, time and field location are not preserved consistently enough to state more precisely. Ferlatti and López described a being only about forty centimeters tall. It appeared to glow or shine and wore trousers that were themselves described as bright or shining. Some later summaries mention a belt or cross-belt, but the accessible reports do not establish the feature securely. The figure was otherwise broadly human in form. The sources do not preserve a reliable skin color, hair description, footwear or detailed face. When the two men tried to move closer, they said they encountered something like a magnetic field—an invisible resistance that kept them at a distance. The reports do not quantify that distance, explain whether they felt pressure or physical symptoms, or describe any instrument producing the effect. The two mechanics reported the incident to the local police. News coverage said that their descriptions agreed with a separate account from a shepherdess in the hills of the Calchaquí Valleys, who had been startled by a similar small visitor while tending sheep. Deputy sheriff Luis Comenares acknowledged that the stories were consistent and that residents were frightened, while also saying that the figure had not reappeared and that seeing it again would be necessary to determine what it was. The shepherdess was not present with Ferlatti and López, so the Atlas treats her report as a separate supporting claim rather than placing all three witnesses in one scene. The wider UFO excitement in San Carlos also remains separate. Residents told reporters that strange luminous objects had recently been seen near town and that some children were afraid to go out at night. None of the accessible accounts says that a craft landed beside the tiny figure, carried it, or was visible during the mechanics' encounter. The Atlas therefore does not connect the being to a depicted vehicle. Several images later circulated as representations of the "little man." One was described as a sketch and another as a computer reconstruction. URECAT noted that the two versions contradicted each other and that neither came with enough information to show who created it, whether it was based directly on testimony, or whether a witness approved it. They are therefore linked at their source pages but are not displayed in the Atlas as reliable likenesses. The surviving documentation is more immediate than many catalogue-only stories because local news and a claimed police report followed quickly. Even so, no police document, complete witness interview, site measurements, physical trace, photograph or formal field investigation is available in the material reviewed. The time of day, exact setting, duration, actions of the figure and reactions of the witnesses remain poorly recorded. Hoax, confusion and an anomalous encounter all remain open possibilities. The portrait focuses on the few stable visual facts: two mechanics in a rural Calchaquí setting confronting one forty-centimeter, faintly luminous humanoid in simple trousers. A subtle distortion in dust and grass represents the reported barrier without pretending it was measured. Mountains and the distant town establish San Carlos; no craft, shepherdess or invented face is added. It is an original Watchers Project interpretation, clearly labeled as reconstruction rather than a copy of the unverified published illustrations.
