Case description
Irma Hinz, using her married name, reported in 1978 that she and a teenage companion had seen a large disc over a vacant lot in Detroit during summer 1922. They were walking home from a film at about 10 p.m., on Dragoon Avenue between Fort and West Jefferson streets, when the sky lit up. The object reportedly descended to approximately treetop height and rotated slowly while hovering.
Rectangular, internally illuminated windows ran around its lower perimeter. Hinz estimated that about twenty bald heads were looking toward the couple. She could see only their necks or shoulders upward, and recalled closely spaced eyes; no other detailed features were recorded. After watching for several minutes, the frightened teenagers left. Her mother treated the account as a possible vision. Hinz remembered her companion's name as William O'Brien.
The HUMCAT entry cites Hinz's early-1978 correspondence with Ron Westrum, an August letter and MUFON form to Ted Bloecher, and a letter from her daughter Carol. These document a recollection more than fifty years later. Carol's confirmation of her mother's story is not an independent observation of the 1922 event. No contemporaneous newspaper account or separate O'Brien interview was recovered, and the couple did not report watching the departure.
