Case description
The Christchurch story was reported by Mrs E. M. Church after a 1973 radio programme, nearly thirty years after the alleged event. Bryan Dickeson reproduces interviews conducted by Bruce Harding in November 1973 and January 1974. Church, a senior nurse then aged twenty-nine, placed it on the Port Hills near the Sign of the Takahe, while heading for a tram—not at a train station.
She described an upturned-saucer form about eighteen to twenty feet wide, clad in vertical brown veneer-like panels, with a dull metal cap and short mast bearing a blue light. Three short green figures appeared enclosed in transparent oblong cases: one outside, two partly visible at a doorway/window. No clear limbs were described. On noticing her, the outside figure’s covering closed and it slid inward. The object subsequently rose slowly into cloud with a whirring sound.
No contemporary photograph or recovered trace supports the account. Dickeson argues for August 1944 from fair dates, while the original recollection allowed 1944 or 1945. The plate follows the detailed description rather than generic green humanoids, including Church, the complete object and three cased forms. Their appearance and the exact hillside are illustrative; later spiritual feelings remain personal testimony.
