Case description
On a summer night in 1946, Vida Goldsworthy and her sister, Mrs. Naudwin, returned from a Johannesburg cinema and took their dog outside near Dalver Street. A later compilation assigns March 31, but John Judge’s original account gives no exact day. At about 12:15 a.m., a thud made them look toward the Langum Hotel.
They saw a silent disc above the roof, approximately 25–30 feet across, white with a brown rim and a golden central sphere. Their dog returned and stood calmly beside them. After clicking sounds, the sphere moved below the disc, then rose through it and stopped above it on two dark supports.
Two tall, humanlike figures appeared in the gap. They had fair, short, wavy hair and white uniforms with brown belts and chest pockets. The women estimated their height at seven feet. The figures appeared to watch them while leaning against an unseen rail; no words were reported.
The disc rotated anticlockwise and, after about two minutes, drifted behind the hotel. The sisters thought it a military device and initially told nobody. Goldsworthy later described the encounter to investigator John Judge, who published it in Flying Saucer Review in 1979.
