Case description
An International News Service dispatch dated 19 August 1949 circulated the story of prospectors Buck Fitzgerald and Mase or Mace Garney in California's Death Valley region. Newspaper versions appeared on 20–21 August. Fitzgerald, described in one report as 73, said a disc about 24 feet across passed at an estimated 300 miles per hour and came down in the desert, roughly 15 miles south of Death Valley. These were reported estimates, not independently measured specifications.
The men allegedly saw two small, humanlike figures leave the object and run across the sand. They gave chase but lost them around a dune. The dispatch invoked extreme heat, reportedly 138°F, as a reason the pursuit failed. Later catalogue versions enlarged the disc, described an inspection or disappearance, and sometimes supplied different encounter dates. Those additions should not be treated as one consistent eyewitness record.
An earlier FBI-related reporting chain and subsequent retrospective summaries complicate the chronology, so 19 August is best retained as the syndicated dispatch date rather than an unquestioned observation date. No authenticated wreckage, occupant, photograph or independently confirmed recovery accompanies the recovered press account. Some researchers suspected a connection with the saucer stories circulating around Frank Scully, but no direct confession by these named prospectors was recovered. The plate illustrates the newspaper claim and its unresolved status.
