Case description

At about four o'clock in the afternoon on May 20, 1950, a woman was walking alone along a path above the Loire near Cours-les-Barres, France. The route followed steep riverbanks through brambles, nettles and acacia. In full daylight she was suddenly surrounded by an intense white light so bright that it overwhelmed her view of the path. Two enormous black hands appeared from above and in front of her. Each had five fingers and a dark surface with a yellowish or copper cast. She could not see arms, a face or a complete body. The hands closed around her face and head, covering her eyes, nose and mouth and pulling her backward against a chest that felt extremely hard and cold, as though made of iron or armoured material. The pressure increased gradually. The woman said the light left her paralysed and the first contact felt like a powerful electrical discharge. She could not defend herself effectively or cry out. The unseen presence swung her forward and backward, then forced her down and dragged her by the head toward the brush. A knee or hard projection struck her back. She heard no breathing. A rough laugh sounded above her, oddly muffled as if heard through water. She then heard a voice say in French, in the published rendering, 'There she is. We've got her,' apparently addressing another presence concealed in the vegetation. Still unable to see an assailant, she was pulled rapidly through nettles, brambles and acacia toward a small pasture. Her bag and money remained with her, arguing against ordinary robbery as the apparent purpose. The grip finally loosened. She managed to sit up among the thorns and recover enough breath to call weakly for help. When she heard movement nearby, she saw branches bending, brambles scraping empty space and grass pressing down as if someone invisible were walking away. She returned to the path with lacerated legs, severe exhaustion, a metallic bitter taste and pain or burning across her back and shoulders. After five or six minutes she reached a bend from which houses were visible. A violent rushing noise then swept through the area like storm wind or a sudden displacement of warm air. Trees bent, another blinding white flash appeared, and she felt that something passed overhead at great speed although she saw no object. The entire episode lasted roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. Later investigation reportedly found blackened or flattened brush, damaged fence posts and broken barbed wire in the pasture. The surviving catalogue account does not provide a modern forensic chain for those traces, and no craft or assailant was photographed. The previous evening the woman had also seen a star-like light stop, rise and hover, but that observation does not establish a direct connection to the assault. Joël Mesnard discussed the case in MUFON UFO Journal number 309, and Jacques Vallée included it in Passport to Magonia. Their publications preserve a highly specific report but do not supply independent confirmation of an invisible figure. The episode can also be considered through possibilities such as assault, trauma, perceptual disturbance or later narrative shaping. The public record is not sufficient to identify the cause. CE4 is retained from the source classification because the witness reported prolonged forced physical interaction and displacement by the unseen presence, although no craft interior, transport or conventional abduction sequence was observed. The classification describes the allegation; it does not authenticate its cause. The portrait reconstructs only what the witness said she could see: the Loire path, blinding light and two huge black copper-tinged hands around her head, with the controlling body entirely absent in the glare. It avoids an invented alien face or spacecraft and keeps the assault non-graphic. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.
