Case description
On 15 March 1950, Dr Craig Hunter said his car developed trouble near Penfield in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, around 18:15. Local newspaper reporting the following day described a grey, disc-shaped object passing at low altitude with a hissing sound. Hunter estimated its dimensions, height and speed; the estimates vary across the published accounts. A truck driver reportedly looked upward and drove away, but no independent statement from him verifying Hunter's account was recovered.
A more elaborate interview by William C. Baggs in the Miami Daily News added details absent from the first local reports. Hunter described moving humanlike images in window-like openings around the lower perimeter, wearing helmets resembling those used by wartime tank crews. He also described an inner rotating section and a bluish-green projectile that approached at a steady slow speed, burst about 20 feet away, and produced white light for 30–45 seconds. He specifically reported no ill effects from that light.
The distinction between the early and expanded versions matters: the apparent occupants and projectile are later press details, not independently confirmed observations. Contemporary discussion compared the object with a recently published saucer illustration; Hunter denied having seen that illustration. The recovered material does not establish either an extraterrestrial event or a demonstrated confession. The plate labels the expanded account and depicts the claimed helmeted forms as unresolved humanlike figures, with its portraits and engineering details illustrative.
