Case description

At about 06:30 one morning in May 1950, fourteen-year-old Madeleine Pierrard and an adult male relative went into the meadows at Vaux-en-Dieulet near Buzancy in the French Ardennes to check the cows. Their dog accompanied them. As they crossed the field, Madeleine cried out and pointed toward what she first thought was the sun unusually close to the ground. A fiery-looking light approached while the witnesses heard a repeated sound she later rendered as hou, hou, hou. When the light came nearer and stopped in front of them, its outline appeared to resolve into a saucer-shaped object made of material as transparent as glass. The adult warned Madeleine not to approach because he feared she might be burned. Through the transparent shell, they reported seeing one small motionless figure about 1.4 metres tall. It wore a tight but heavily segmented diving-style suit that Madeleine compared with the Michelin Man. Its arms remained slightly spread at its sides as if the suit restricted them. The occupant's head was enclosed in something like a motorcycle helmet with a clear visor. Two tubes ran from the helmet toward two bottle-like containers above or behind the shoulders. The figure did not walk, gesture or speak. Madeleine's strongest impression was that it stared continuously toward her. Both witnesses said they became unable to move. A wave of heat surrounded them, compared with the sensation of strong sun on the skin. The observation lasted approximately two minutes. No physical contact, boarding or transport was described. The object then rose while turning slightly like a spinning top. Its ascent occurred in a sequence of steps rather than one smooth climb, accompanied by the same repeated sound. It disappeared in the direction of Buzancy. A scorched area was later reported on the ground. The accessible source does not provide measurements, photographs, samples, laboratory testing or a documented chain of custody, so the trace remains part of the reported account rather than established evidence. The surviving publication trail is late. Ardennes researcher Jean-Michel Ligeron said in 1981 that he had collected Madeleine's testimony, more than thirty years after the claimed event. Some retellings identify the adult as her father, while another describes him as Mr. Pierrard and his sister's daughter. The Atlas preserves that relationship uncertainty. The specificity of the suit, helmet, tubes, transparent object and two-witness setting gives the story a distinctive internal structure. The long delay, incomplete trace documentation and absence of a contemporary report prevent the Atlas from treating those details as independently confirmed. CE3 records the reported occupant observation. The portrait reconstructs the shared meadow scene: Madeleine beside the adult and dog, facing one completely transparent low saucer containing exactly one small, motionless, helmeted figure with segmented suit and twin breathing tubes. It shows no contact or abduction. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not documentary evidence.

This retelling identifies Madeleine’s companion as her father; other source versions identify her uncle. This retelling identifies Madeleine’s companion as her father; other source versions identify her uncle. The transparent craft, suit details, bodily sensations and ground traces are reported observations. The film’s interpretation of paralysis and heat does not establish their mechanism.
