Case description

The October 1950 entry derives from a regional newspaper story rather than a single encounter at Moose Factory. A Canadian Press report in the Sault Ste Marie Daily Star on 21 October relayed Don Delaplante’s dispatch about unexplained events around James Bay. Three Indigenous observers had interpreted a water-borne object as a submarine. A nearly stationary red light was separately reported by the Hudson’s Bay Company factor and assistant at Nemaska. Other reports concerned a large airplane accompanied by a smaller one apparently standing still over northern Quebec, and unfamiliar white men who fled into the forest near Fort George. The explosions mentioned in the story had occurred the previous March near Old Factory River. Those different places and dates should not become one scene in which strange men emerge from a submarine beneath a red UFO. RCMP Commissioner S. T. Wood said headquarters had received the sea-creature-or-submarine report, rejected the submarine interpretation because the water was too shallow, and had not heard the other stories. That response differs substantially from treating the whole collection as a confirmed police investigation. The plate uses labelled regional vignettes and portrays the reported men as ordinary humans.
