Case description
Francis P. Wall described this Korean War experience in a January 1987 interview with CUFOS associate John Timmerman. He placed it in early spring 1951 near Chorwon in the Iron Triangle, while serving in Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. The Atlas’s May date is more specific than that interview. Wall said troops had warned a village before an artillery bombardment when an orange, glowing object descended across a mountain and moved among the airbursts.
In his recollection, the object approached and became brilliantly blue-green and pulsating. After receiving permission from his commander, he fired an M-1 rifle at it and thought he heard metallic impacts. He described erratic movement, lights going out briefly and a sound like revving diesel locomotives. A sweeping, pulsed light then allegedly produced burning and tingling sensations among the men. They took shelter in dugouts; Wall and another soldier watched it hover before it departed abruptly at an angle.
Wall further claimed that three days later men were evacuated because of severe weakness and dysentery, and that doctors found high white-cell counts. He said the group decided against recording the encounter in its company report because they feared being considered unstable. These are retrospective claims; the transcript does not supply contemporaneous medical records or independently demonstrate a connection between the illness and the light.
The published introduction says Richard Haines confirmed Wall’s military service and obtained a drawing, which supports biographical context rather than verifying the encounter. No occupants were described. The plate selects the bunker observation, with two soldiers and the luminous object, avoiding gunfire, injury or an invented alien crew.
