West Palm Beach entity encounter — 1952-08-19

On the night of 19 August 1952, scoutmaster D.S. “Sonny” Desvergers was driving three boys home near West Palm Beach, Florida, when he stopped to investigate lights in palmetto scrub. He entered the vegetation with a flashlight and machete, reportedly concerned about a possible aircraft accident. His account described oppressive heat, an unusual smell and a smooth grey, domed circular object hanging close overhead. Desvergers said a red, mistlike emission overcame him and he lost consciousness. The boys, who remained by the road, reported reddish lights and ran for help. Law officers later found him frightened, with singed hair, reddened skin and small burns in his cap. Air Force investigators collected grass samples; laboratory examination reportedly found charred roots without corresponding destruction of the upper blades. These observations did not independently establish the source of the effects. Edward Ruppelt’s investigation ultimately classified the story as a hoax, while acknowledging unresolved details. Karl Pflock’s review distinguishes the original testimony from later additions: a creature appeared in a 1953 retelling, followed by claims of a struggle with three grey-clothed humanoids and changed statements about consciousness. The Atlas’s “hideous” occupant should therefore not be treated as part of the original corroborated sequence. The plate uses a neutral report illustration to distinguish the scoutmaster’s craft claim from later occupant embellishments, without depicting burns or an attack.
