Case description

Harold Wilkins quoted a Buffalo Evening News item dated 27 August 1952 about an unnamed householder at Lamberton, North Carolina. The man supposedly saw an object about 8 feet long and 6 feet wide knock bricks from his chimney and settle in his yard. A figure about 2 feet 6 inches tall emerged. When the householder asked whether he was hurt, the figure re-entered and the object departed noisily. The cited date is the newspaper's publication date, not an independently established encounter date. Wilkins withheld endorsement, and the quoted passage also included sensational claims about other saucer occupants unable to tolerate Earth's atmosphere. Later catalogue versions shortened the story and altered or rounded its dimensions, losing some of the original context. Patrick Gross assesses the item as probable journalistic parody or a hoax; the original clipping has not been independently authenticated here. A separate attached Lumberton account involving five witnesses and a much larger saucer contains conflicting details and is not merged into this householder story. The plate labels the probable parody context and depicts an uninjured small man, householder and whole small object, with clothing, vehicle details and daylight explicitly illustrative.

Retells the chimney-striking small-craft account as James J. Allen, Lumberton, August 6, 1952. UFO-0554 preserves a Lamberton version quoted from an August 27 newspaper item, assessed as probable parody or hoax. Publication date, spelling and source-history differences remain unresolved. Other Lumberton episodes in the programme are separate.
