Case description
On 24 June 1953, miners John Black and John Van Allen told the Butte County sheriff’s office about repeated sightings near their Brush Creek workings. The best-known alleged landings were dated 20 May and 20 June. Black’s detailed occupant story concerns a small silvery craft near a creek sandbar and a short, broad-shouldered, humanlike figure collecting water in a shiny pail.
He said the figure passed the water to someone inside, noticed a disturbance and hurried back aboard before the object departed. Retellings vary in the craft’s dimensions, landing gear and the occupant’s clothing: some describe hooded outer clothing, others a jacket, green trousers and cap. Van Allen’s involvement should not automatically make him an independent witness to every detail of Black’s close view. Claims about traces also became inconsistent under questioning.
A publicly anticipated return on 20 July drew observers and news crews, but no object appeared. The Air Force’s investigation recorded the men’s uncertain background, conflicting trace information and the unsuccessful watch; Blue Book classified the case as a hoax. The reconstruction labels the account disputed and isolates Black’s reported water-collecting phase, rather than presenting the expected return or its crowd as an actual landing.
