Case description

September 1954 coverage identifies the Coldwater boy as John Jacob Swaim, twelve, although later catalogues often spell the surname Swain. Returning from tractor work on his father’s farm, he reportedly noticed a figure crouching in a terrace field. The early newspaper account calls the event a Sunday evening; later chronologies use differing September dates, so the plate retains month-level precision. Swaim described a dark-complexioned man about the size of a five-year-old, with a pointed nose, prominent ears, shiny clothing and two cylinders strapped to his back. When approached, the figure allegedly moved or floated toward a nearby object. The newspaper calls that craft cucumber-like and roughly three feet long and high, hovering just above the ground with small leg-like fittings. Later retellings replace it with a saucer. It reportedly became luminous and disappeared. The county sheriff and other visitors were said to find unusual footprints and a circular mark the following morning. Those reported marks do not establish an extraterrestrial origin. The inherited sentence ending “He carried two” is clarified by the contemporary description of the back cylinders. The reconstruction follows the early oblong craft version and preserves the surname, date and shape differences rather than combining them silently.
