Case description
Contemporary Corriere di Tripoli coverage places Carmelo Papotto’s alleged encounter at Ain Zara, outside Tripoli, early on 23 October 1954. The tenant farmer said a luminous aircraft descended near the farm. Its reported appearance was more like a streamlined vehicle with a tail than the generic flying saucer of later illustrations: an aluminium-like lower body, transparent upper section and six wheels.
Papotto described six humanlike men in yellowish clothing and face coverings, working around instruments beneath intense white interior lighting. One reportedly uncovered an ordinary human face. When Papotto approached and touched or tried to climb the vehicle, he said he received an electric shock. A crew member gestured for him to remain still. Later details included a wheel being removed and replaced before departure.
The press described inspections and wheel marks, but these are reported findings, not an independently available technical investigation. Later catalogue versions change the date, call the body egg-shaped and add a compressor-like sound where the early coverage stresses quiet descent. A review of the recovered newspaper series explains those changes and the story’s uncertain evidential limits. The plate follows the wheeled, transparent-bodied vehicle and humanlike crew rather than treating it as an authenticated extraterrestrial machine.
