Case description
Contemporary French newspapers dated 20 October 1954 reproduced a Rome dispatch about painter Raffaele Castello at Cape Massullo on Capri. They said he watched a disc descend toward the terrace of Curzio Malaparte's villa during a night walk. Later catalogues commonly assign the encounter to 17 October, but the recovered dispatch's publication date should not automatically be treated as its observation date.
Castello supposedly first considered a helicopter, then described a disc about 5 metres across and four small men in coverall-like outfits. He said they remained around it for approximately half an hour. From his position he could not hear speech clearly, and he described repeated blue, needle-like gleams around the machine. The figures allegedly returned inside before it rose vertically with a gentle humming sound and accelerated away.
Malaparte was not the observer; contemporary reporting explicitly noted his absence. Some newspapers treated the story humorously, adding literary jokes and details not shared by the more straightforward dispatch. Maurizio Verga's reduced ITACAT index lists the Capri case as false, insufficiently documented and unreliable, without presenting its full investigative rationale there. No authenticated landing trace, photograph or independent occupant account was recovered. The plate illustrates the terrace claim with Castello and four minimally specified humanlike figures, keeping the exact faces and vehicle engineering artistic and the newspaper-story status explicit.
