Case description

The Grosseto entry survives in substantially different versions associated with a woman named Ermellina or Ermelinda Lanzillo. Vallée's catalogue places a single garden visitor around 27 October 1954, near 23:30. HUMCAT's later correction and other Italian retellings instead use different October dates and describe two or three figures near a pigsty. These details should not be combined into one increasingly elaborate encounter. In the imported single-visitor version, Lanzillo was looking for her cat from a window when she noticed a figure in the garden. It appeared plump, with narrow shoulders, ape-like eyes and a large head compared with a diving helmet. She attributed her initial immobility to fear and withdrew after a relative called. The alternate account describes sturdy, normally sized figures in shiny blue-green outfits and diver-like helmets, with a nephew rather than a niece involved in the aftermath. No craft is described in either recovered strand, and the relative should not automatically be counted as an independent witness to the figures. The reporting differences prevent a precise unified date, entity count or appearance from being established. The plate explicitly follows the single garden-visitor account, with the other version explained here, rather than adding a saucer or presenting the two descriptions as corroborating observations.
