Chaleix entity encounter — 1954

In early October 1954, farmer Garreau of Chaleix reported an unusual object in a field and two ordinary-looking men beside it. Early newspaper versions describe a grey, cart-sized object compared to a soup tureen or other rounded form. Fog and semidarkness complicated the description; its precise geometry was never consistently established. In the more elaborate press narrative, the men wore khaki clothing, shook his hand, used words interpreted as asking about Paris or the north, and petted his dog before the object departed rapidly and silently. Nothing in that description establishes nonhuman faces or anatomy. Later writers proposed that Garreau had encountered a helicopter and its crew, sometimes presenting a NATO identification more confidently than the available evidence warrants. The witness's much later recollection differed substantially. A 1979 inquiry reported that he remembered a grey shape and two men but not the handshake or conversation, and that he had not observed arrival or departure. Those differences limit treating the early story as a stable, fully corroborated encounter. The plate labels its scene as the early press version and the helicopter explanation as proposed; it neither replaces the men with aliens nor asserts that a particular military aircraft was conclusively identified.
