Case description

Pierre Lucas, a 20-year-old bakery worker at Pen-ar-Prat near Loctudy, told an unusual story from around 04:00 on 5 October 1954. Ouest-France's contemporary account places him in the bakery yard drawing water for the first batch of dough. He had filled his bucket when a saucer-shaped object, estimated at 2.5–3 metres across, supposedly stopped about 5 metres away. A small figure approached and tapped his shoulder while making incomprehensible sounds. Lucas said he returned to the bakery and the visitor followed. In the interior light he described an approximately 1.2-metre figure with a hairy oval face and very large eyes. He called his employer, Mr Le Goff, but the visitor and object had disappeared before the employer could observe them. The employer's subsequent search reportedly found no trace, either outside or in the bakehouse. Later newspapers declared that an escaped trained goat had frightened the baker. The recovered items provide little evidence for that identification, and later researchers disputed whether the explanation arose from a joke. Gross assesses invention, but the distinction between assessment and demonstrated confession remains necessary. The reconstruction illustrates the original claim, labels the disputed goat explanation, and combines the courtyard object with the face reportedly seen more clearly indoors.
