Case description
Montluçon railway employee Laugère's story was reported internationally during the October 1954 French saucer wave. Common summaries date it to October 12, although other catalogues use October 10. He said he encountered a metallic torpedo-like object near railway diesel storage, with a hairy individual or a man in a long hairy coat beside it. Contemporary newspaper descriptions estimated the apparent machine at about twelve feet long.
Laugère reportedly asked what the stranger wanted. Although he did not understand the reply, some early accounts say he thought he heard a word resembling gasoil. He then went to summon colleagues or report to the stationmaster. On looking back, he supposedly saw a light rise and disappear. The often-repeated description of an alien refuelling its craft is therefore an interpretation of an already ambiguous reported scene.
A later local inquiry identified a prank by fellow railway workers. Figuet and Ruchon's reference account describes a goatskin disguise, a lamp or blowtorch and a fireworks rocket used to suggest departure. Those findings were subsequently omitted from many compressed retellings. The plate shows ordinary railwaymen and contextual prank props, rather than a real extraterrestrial at a fuel tank. Its arrangement is illustrative, not a preserved photograph of an inspection, and no specific fabricated torpedo apparatus is invented.
