Case description
Contemporary reports identify three boys roller-skating near the Pournoy-la-Chétive cemetery in October 1954: Gilbert Calba, twelve, Daniel Hirsch, nine, and Jean-Pierre Hirsch, five. Wording describing Friday supports October 8, while later catalogues often give October 9. They claimed a luminous, round object about 2.5–3.5 metres across stood on three supports, with yellow, white and sometimes black markings.
A small figure, about 1.2 metres tall, allegedly approached carrying a flashlight. The boys described a hairy face, large eyes and a black cassock-like garment; one early version also mentions a luminous cross. They could not understand its words and ran away, subsequently reporting a bright object rising. Robert Maguin or Magnin, fifteen or sixteen in different versions, described a distant light and should not be made a fourth close observer.
Le Républicain Lorrain's October 15 follow-up identified the supposed visitor as a local man collecting grass for rabbits after work. His flashlight and unsuccessful attempts to identify himself reportedly frightened the children; the newspaper dismissed the saucer as imagination. This contemporary explanation is material to the case. Later additions of a paralysing weapon or four children all encountering an extraterrestrial go beyond the earlier witness descriptions.
