Case description
The Ujvari story belongs to the Saint-Rémy area of the Vosges, although many catalogues place it under nearby Raon-l'Étape. Contemporary reporting names the forty-year-old worker Louis Ujvari; later accounts use Lazlo or Laszlo. At about 2:30 a.m., on his way to work, he reportedly stopped cycling because of road repairs and encountered a man who threatened him with a revolver. Dates vary between October 20 and 21, 1954.
Ujvari described an ordinary human-looking man in a windbreaker, trousers, boots and cloth or pilot-like headgear. After initial incomprehension they allegedly conversed in Russian. The stranger asked about Spain, Italy, the German border and the direction of Marseille, and disputed Ujvari's time by consulting his own watch. Ujvari then passed a small grey apparatus resembling joined plates with a low dome and fin-tipped antenna. Once dismissed, he reportedly watched it rise and accelerate away with a whistling sound. The contemporary report says he found no marks afterward.
The same reporting records police and intelligence inquiries, but it does not establish an extraterrestrial occupant. Ujvari himself considered the stranger Russian. Subsequent explanations include a helicopter and a hoax involving Polish workers; later researchers disputed those conclusions and the evidence offered for them. Neither interpretation should be presented as a verified resolution. The plate selects the reported saucer version while keeping the stranger human and omitting the armed threat.
