Case description
Jessie Roestenburg, often incorrectly called Jennie Roestenberg, reported seeing an object above Vicarage Farm at Ranton, Staffordshire, on October 21, 1954. Her sons Anthony, eight, and Ronald, six, were involved; her young daughter Karin was also at home. Husband Tony was absent from the initial encounter. The nearby Stafford location should not be replaced by the imported reference to Shrewsbury.
Gavin Gibbons’s contemporary Flying Saucer News report describes a hissing noise, a silver saucer with a dome divided into transparent front and metallic rear sections, and two long-haired humanlike men with high foreheads and clear bowl-shaped helmets. The machine tilted while they looked toward the family. It reportedly rose, flashed a purple-blue light, circled and departed. The early witness sketch gives about twenty feet across, smaller than the roof-covering object described in later television interviews.
Clock times, the children’s positions and the number of circuits vary across reports. Later sensations, health claims and other family sightings should not be inserted as verified effects of this first episode. The plate follows the early craft drawing, placing Jessie and her two sons together beneath it, with two ordinary-looking helmeted occupants. It is an illustration of the account, not a recovered photograph or proof of the occupants’ origin.
