Case description
Rubem Hellwig, a rice planter, claimed two encounters near Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, in March 1954. The first reportedly occurred around 5 p.m. while he was driving home. He noticed a melon- or rugby-football-shaped object about the size of a Volkswagen, roughly fifty metres from the road, and walked toward it. One slim, brown-faced man sat inside while another collected grass; neither wore a helmet.
The outside man reportedly approached with a bottle of reddish liquid and asked for ammonia. Hellwig said he understood despite unfamiliar speech, and directed him to a nearby chemist. The object became brilliantly luminous and vanished with blue-yellow light or flames. In the claimed next-day meeting, the crew changed to a tall fair-complexioned man and two long-black-haired women in brown suede-like zippered garments. That trio is a separate phase, not the first encounter's crew.
Gordon Creighton's source was Diário de Notícias of August 25,1965, more than eleven years later. His account and subsequent books provide the source trail; no contemporaneous 1954 investigation was recovered. The later conversation about scientists, telepathy and a planet called Arion belongs to Hellwig's contactee narrative. The plate isolates the first meeting and leaves unrecorded clothing and entrance details illustrative.
