Case description
On the night of 21 September 1954, a civilian guard at Santa Maria Airport in the Azores reported a humming or whining sound and an approaching light metallic-blue object. Descriptions compared its rounded, elongated body with a pecan or football, approximately 10 feet long and 5 feet high. Its forward section appeared transparent, with a door, an orange light and pole-like aerial fittings. No landing gear was visible.
The object reportedly hovered and descended about 50 feet from the guard. A blond, human-looking man, estimated at 5 feet 10 inches tall, emerged and spoke in a language the guard did not understand. The account says he patted the guard’s shoulder in a friendly manner. As car headlights approached the guard post, the visitor returned inside, fastened a belt and shoulder harness, operated a control and departed, first nose-up, then briefly level before climbing steeply. The whole episode lasted approximately 2–3 minutes.
Air Intelligence Report IR-225-54 preserves the account and the airport authorities’ comments on the 26-year-old guard’s reliability. It records no photographs or physical evidence and remained an unidentified, second-hand report in the Blue Book record. Retellings vary over local clock time and occasionally shift the date. Separate reports of unusual lights elsewhere do not independently corroborate the close encounter. Human appearance alone does not establish the visitor’s identity or origin.
