Russell party train sighting near Baku — October 4, 1955
Baku, Azerbaijan, Soviet Union
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On October 4, 1955, Senator Richard Russell's party reported unusual aerial objects while travelling by train from Baku toward Tiflis in the Soviet Union. The Atlas's imported entry names no entities; its former entity classification was unsupported.
A CIA memorandum prepared on October 31 describes interviews with all four members of the party. Around 7:10 p.m., after passing Alyaty, Russell noticed a yellow-green light ascending outside his window and called the others. The party agreed on an impression of rotation during the initial ascent but disagreed on appearance and later flight. Efron recalled paired lights with a searchlight between them; the interviewing officer considered a nighttime jet afterburner a possible comparison. Colonel Hathaway described a circular object and rejected aircraft or missile types familiar to him. Interpretations of reflected light and distance were uncertain.
Herbert Scoville's memorandum explicitly treated the disagreement as unresolved: Hathaway's description posed the greatest technical difficulty, while the other accounts might fit existing aircraft or missiles. It did not conclude that the Soviets possessed a radically new aircraft. Gerald Haines's later CIA history summarized the agency's eventual assessment as ordinary jets climbing steeply.
This is a visual sighting followed by differing witness descriptions and an intelligence assessment. It supplies no occupant, physical-effect or abduction account.
