Case description

On June 16, 1956, lawyer and law professor João de Freitas Guimarães traveled to São Sebastião, Brazil, on professional business. Finding the court closed, he took a room at a hotel and went for a walk along the beach after dinner. At about 7:10 or 7:15 p.m., he noticed a jet of water between the mainland and Ilha Bela and first assumed that he was watching a whale. A rounded apparatus emerged from the sea and moved toward the beach. It extended landing supports ending in large spheres and settled close to the waterline. Two tall fair-skinned men with long light hair came toward Guimarães. They wore green one-piece garments. He asked in Portuguese whether there had been an accident, then repeated the question in French, English and Italian, but received no spoken answer. Guimarães said he perceived a telepathic invitation to enter. He felt an irresistible curiosity rather than physical force and followed one man toward the craft while the other walked behind him. The leading figure climbed inside easily; Guimarães needed both hands to negotiate the entrance. A third crew member waited within. Once the door closed, the object rose from the beach. During ascent Guimarães felt mildly unwell and saw water covering or streaking the windows. In the mental exchange, the occupants attributed that effect to counter-rotating parts rather than rain and described a radiation-filtering field surrounding the vehicle. Those explanations are statements Guimarães attributed to the visitors, not established engineering observations. He described passing through dark regions filled with brilliant stars, brighter illuminated zones and a violet layer in which the craft shook. The occupants indicated that they had left Earth's atmosphere but did not answer questions about their origin. A circular control panel carried three sensitive needles that vibrated strongly; one visitor associated the controls with magnetic forces. The craft returned Guimarães to the São Sebastião area after what he estimated as thirty to forty minutes. His wristwatch had stopped. During the journey, he said, the visitors arranged another meeting for August 12, 1957, conveying the date through constellation symbols and repeated eights. He did not attend because publicity had attracted a planned crowd and, he later claimed, an Air Force officer warned that fighters might be present. A second-hand report says that a craft appeared on the appointed date, but that is not independent proof of the earlier journey. The surviving account was reproduced in April 1976 from a 1975 SBEDV bulletin and referred back to interviews conducted in 1957. Its presence in a government-held archive documents custody of a civilian narrative; it does not transform the story into a contemporary official investigation. A separate imported catalogue record dates what appears to be the same event to July 25, 1957. The Atlas preserves that conflict and treats the June 16, 1956 chronology from ARX.0.0.6 as the basis for this record without deleting the alternate listing. No authenticated photograph, instrument record or physical artifact confirms the sea-emergent craft or journey. The portrait reconstructs the voluntary threshold: Guimarães at the São Sebastião waterline, a rounded wet craft on spherical-ended supports, two tall long-haired men in green inviting him aboard and a third visible inside. It does not portray force or a generic saucer. The image is an illustrative reconstruction of his account, not evidence that the reported journey occurred.

The programme gives July 16, 1956; the preserved source account gives June 16, 1956. Both describe Joao de Freitas Guimaraes’s Sao Sebastiao beach encounter; the date difference remains visible in the record. Narrator explicitly acknowledges June16 versus July16 and prefers July. Preserved source gives June16. Journey, messages and subsequent claimed contacts remain witness account; professional standing does not independently authenticate events.
