At about 9:14 p.m. local time on February 13, 1958, a U.S. Air Force C-54 was flying between Tokyo and Wake Island, approximately two hours west of Wake. The flight engineer, looking through a rear window, saw an instantaneous and intensely bright greenish-blue, flare-like flash. The light was strong enough to startle the pilots in the cockpit even though a closed, illuminated compartment separated them from the flight engineer. During the same hour, the flight recorded one visual observation and two radar contacts.
