Panama Canal Zone multi-radar tracking
Fort Kobbe and Pacific side of the Isthmus, Canal Zone, Panama
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
At about 8:00 p.m. on March 9, 1958, search radar on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal Zone detected an unidentified object approaching the isthmus. By about 8:45 p.m., two additional radar returns had appeared, and the contacts were transferred to track radar. Multiple stations followed the targets as they moved on a steady but slightly circular path near Fort Kobbe. The targets moved rapidly enough to break the track-radar lock, after which the equipment reacquired them. Around midnight, radar personnel reported that the object became evasive whenever a searchlight was directed toward it.
