Case description
On December 9, 1954, farmer Olmiro da Costa e Rosa was tending animals near Linha Bela Vista, outside Venâncio Aires, Rio Grande do Sul. He reported a noise resembling a sewing machine and animals scattering as a cream-coloured object, compared to a pith helmet, hovered low nearby. Three broad-shouldered, human-looking figures were associated with it, one remaining partly visible at its opening.
The strangers were described as very pale, with long blond hair, slanting eyes and light-brown coveralls extending into heel-less footwear. One approached the farmer while another stood by a fence. A visitor examined his hoe and returned it. They reportedly collected bean and maize plants. When the farmer moved toward the figure by the fence, it signalled him to stop. His offer of a sheep was refused, and he could not understand their speech.
The object allegedly rose and accelerated westward, leaving an unusual smell but no demonstrated landing marks. The story was publicized through João Martins and later UFO writers, with a later family recollection also preserved. The imported reference to tobacco, tomatoes and a chicken conflates this account with a separate nearby report involving Pedro Morais. Those details are not treated as events witnessed by da Costa e Rosa.
